Casa Batlló

This was a remodelling rather than a new build: Gaudí reworked an existing Eixample apartment block for Josep Batlló between 1904 and 1906, adding the bowed stone frontage, the protruding balconies and a façade surfaced in ceramic trencadís. The roof, tiled in scaled courses and topped with twisted chimneys, is the reason locals called it Casa del Drac, and the bone-like columns of the lower storeys gave it the second nickname, Casa dels Ossos. It remains an apartment building in form, with seven floors above a basement.
