Palau Güell

Gaudí built this as a town residence for Eusebi Güell between 1885 and 1890, on a narrow street off the Rambla, which is why the two parabolic arches at street level are wide enough to take a horse and carriage straight into the building. The plan turns on a central parlour that rises the full height of the house under a perforated parabolic dome, designed for receiving and entertaining. Twenty mosaic-clad chimneys stand on the roof terrace, and admission is waived on the first Sunday of the month.
