Casa Calvet

Built in 1898 and 1899 for the textile manufacturer Pere Màrtir Calvet, this was designed as both dwelling and business premises, and Barcelona City Council named it building of the year in 1900. It is the most conventional of Gaudí's Eixample buildings: a symmetrical dressed-stone front relieved by curved wrought-iron balconies, with sculptural detail worked into the wall rather than applied to it. The interior is not open to visitors, and part of the ground floor is occupied by a chocolatier; the façade is read from the pavement.
