1985 Val di Stava dam collapse
Two mine tailings dams in northeastern Italy failed suddenly, releasing approximately 180,000 cubic metres of tailings that buried the villages of Stava and Tesero. The case study records 268 people killed and damage of 133 to 150 million euro. It attributes the collapse to a combination of physical and human factors, including stability analyses that were inadequate during design and construction and warning signs that were ignored.
