1961 Panshet Dam failure
The dam on the Ambi River burst in the early hours after prolonged heavy rains, in its first year of holding back water, and within three hours vast areas of Pune along the banks of the Mutha were flooded. The failure in turn caused the Khadakwasla dam about 20 kilometres downstream to overtop. Water had been impounded before the dam was finished and well before its scheduled opening, and later assessments cite the construction schedule, design problems, an incomplete sluice conduit and incomplete gates and hoists.
