1923 Gleno Dam failure
An 80 metre long section of the dam on Gleno Creek, in Valle del Povo within Valle di Scalve, Lombardy, collapsed in the early morning about 40 days after the reservoir was first filled completely. The released water ran as far as 21 kilometres downstream, destroying three villages, five power stations, bridges, isolated buildings and factories. The structure had been intended to supply hydroelectric power, and accounts of the collapse attribute the failure of the middle section to the quality of its construction.
