1928 St. Francis Dam failure
The dam in San Francisquito Canyon, about 40 miles northwest of Los Angeles, collapsed two and a half minutes before midnight, and the flood cut a path from the canyon to the coast. Casualty counts differ between sources: one account gives more than 450 killed, while an archival record gives more than 600 residents plus an unknown number of itinerant farm workers camped in the canyon.
