Typhoon Saomai (2000)
Before the typhoon made landfall on Okinawa it raised rough seas off the coast of Japan that led to several shipping incidents. As Saomai later tracked near China, its outer rainbands and strong waves prompted the evacuation of 20,000 people and produced record high stream heights. Damage across the affected areas came to roughly US$9.24 billion.
