St James Tidal Pool

Built in 1903 on the False Bay coast between Muizenberg and Kalk Bay, this one has a sandy floor rather than rock underfoot and no steps: you wade in from the edge. Most of it is shallow enough for children, with a deeper section towards the ocean side where the sea tops the wall at high tide. The Victorian bathing boxes behind it draw photographers early and late; showers, toilets and a changing room are on site, and it is about 30 minutes from the city.
