Papeneiland

A corner canal house with two step gables at the head of the Prinsengracht, dated to 1642. Inside are Delft tiles, with old paintings hung high on the walls. The name means 'Papists' island' and dates from when Catholicism was banned: a tunnel, now closed, runs from here to a secret church across the canal. Apple pie is the thing to order.
