Olympisch Stadion
Jan Wils designed the stadium for the 1928 Summer Olympics, and it is the one piece of Amsterdam School work built to be seen by the world rather than lived in: brick laid in long horizontal courses, with the Marathon Tower at one corner. The tower held the fire that burned through the Games, the first time an Olympic flame was kept at a stadium. Threatened with demolition in the 1980s, it was given monument protection and restored to its 1928 configuration in the late 1990s.
