Puyehue-Cordón Caulle, 2011

The eruption broke out from the Cordón Caulle fissure on Saturday 4 June after 51 years of inactivity, throwing out pumice stones and a cloud of ash 10 kilometres high and five kilometres wide. Chile's National Emergencies Office declared a pre-emptive red alert for Puyehue, Río Bueno, Futrono and Lago Ranco, and 600 people were evacuated at first. Ash fell on San Carlos de Bariloche in Argentina, 100 miles to the east, and the Chilean civil aviation authority said the tip of the cloud had travelled around the world and more or less reached Coyhaique, about 600 kilometres to the south.
