El Chichón, 1982
Late in the evening of 28 March the volcano in southeastern Mexico produced a tremendous explosion that sent a column of ash and gases 10 miles high within an hour. There were no immediate warning signals, although increased earthquake activity had been noted for months and possibly a few years beforehand.
