Submarine volcano NNE of Iriomotejima, 1924
A major submarine eruption occurred about 25 km north-northeast of Iriomote-jima Island in the southern Ryukyu Islands, part of the arc formed by subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate. It produced rhyolitic pumice rafts of an estimated volume of about 1 cubic kilometre, which currents carried along both coasts of Japan as far north as Hokkaido. The catalogue marks the explosivity index for this eruption as uncertain.
