Sakurajima, 1914
Also recorded as the Taisho eruption, the activity began on 11 January 1914. Earthquakes before the eruption killed 35 people and the eruption itself killed 23. Lava flows filled the narrow strait between Sakurajima and the Ōsumi Peninsula, and in the final stages the centre of the Aira caldera sank by about 60 cm as the underlying magma chamber emptied.
