Caffè Elena

Between its opening year of 1889 and 1902, Giuseppe Carpano refined his forebear Antonio Benedetto Carpano's 1786 vermouth recipe on these premises, and an arched window above one entrance still reads "Carpano Vermuth". The original interior survives: large mirrors and small paintings by the poet G.M. Bertagna. Head barman Matias Griffa marked the 135th anniversary with a Piedmont-distilled Vermuth Caffè Elena 1889 and a new cocktail list. It stays open past one in the morning, which puts it well beyond café hours.
