1963 Vajont Dam disaster
At 10:39 pm on 9 October 1963 a part of the mountain slid from the top of Monte Toc into the reservoir behind the newly built dam in the Vaiont Gorge, about 100 kilometres north of Venice, which had been constructed to supply hydroelectric power to northern Italy. Rock, trees and earth entering the water drove it up to some 250 metres and over the dam crest, and the inland wave swept away entire villages. Reported deaths range from nearly 2,000 bodies recovered to more than 2,000; the estimates differ.
