The Salzburg Festival has never had a single house. It plays a Baroque church, a riding school quarried out of the Mönchsberg, a cathedral square that turns into an open-air stage, a converted cinema and the city's repertory theatres, most of them clustered in the Festspielbezirk that grew out of the archbishop's stables of 1606/07.
