Appalachian Trail
The trail runs between Springer Mountain in Georgia and Mount Katahdin in Maine, proceeding northeastward from the Springer Mountain summit, where a plaque marks the southern end. It passes through fourteen states along the way. Benton MacKaye, a Massachusetts forester and philosopher, conceived the idea in 1921, and the route is maintained and marked largely by volunteers. It is counted as one of the three trails in the Triple Crown of Hiking.
