Royal Opera Arcade
Built 1816-1818 by John Nash and George Stanley Repton as part of their recasing of Novosielski's Haymarket Opera House, this is the surviving fragment of that scheme and the earliest of London's arcades. The listing describes stucco-faced brick under a slated and glazed lantern roof, and the original nineteen shops ran down the west side only, each with its own cellar and mezzanine. The plaque at the entrance dates completion to 1821, a few years later than the Historic England description; either way Burlington Arcade followed it. It runs between Pall Mall and Charles II Street, and survived a fire, dereliction and the Blitz, after which the New Zealand government leased the bombed site in 1948.
