Sturges House

The only Usonian house Wright built in California, commissioned by Lockheed engineer George D. Sturges and his wife and supervised on site by the young John Lautner. It is under 1,200 square feet with two bedrooms and one bath, and the 54-foot cantilevered terraces take up almost as much area as the interior; brick walls and horizontal bands of redwood carry a roof deck angled at the ocean. Wright wrote to Lautner that it was one of the simplest things the office had done and one of the best. Designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.
