2018 Sulawesi earthquake
The shock struck on the Friday evening and was followed by a tsunami along the coasts of Palu and Donggala in Central Sulawesi, with runup heights inside Palu Bay reaching over 10 metres. The shaking, the waves and widespread liquefaction caused heavy destruction across Palu, Donggala, Sigi and Parigi Moutong. On 30 September the national disaster management agency spokesman, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, put the number killed at 405 and said it was expected to rise. Reported magnitudes differ, with 7.4 and 7.5 both given in contemporary accounts.
