2006 Banda Sea earthquake
The quake struck the Banda Sea south of Ambon at 01:58 local time on 28 January, deep enough that it shook a wide area without causing major damage. Several buildings in Ambon, including the Ambon Plaza shopping centre, were left with cracked walls. One contemporary account gave the size as 7.7 on the Richter scale and the depth as 340 kilometres, and quoted an Ambon resident, Sulaiman Tuasikal, telling AFP that sleeping people were woken by it.
