2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake
The rupture ran along roughly 1,600 kilometres of the boundary between the Indo-Australian and southeastern Eurasian plates, beginning off the west coast of Sumatra at 07:58:53 local time. Fault slip reached up to 15 metres near Banda Aceh, while rapid slip north along the Nicobar and Andaman Islands was much smaller; tsunami and geodetic data indicate further slow slip in the north over 50 minutes or longer. Published moment magnitude estimates differ, from 9.1 to 9.3. The largest aftershock, off Nias, registered magnitude 8.7, and seismologists debated whether to call it an aftershock or a triggered earthquake.
