2007 Cần Thơ Bridge collapse
A span of the Japanese-funded bridge under construction across the Hau River, a branch of the Mekong, came down on the Wednesday, leaving workers trapped or injured while rescue teams dug through the rubble. On the day, the director of Central Can Tho General Hospital said at least 34 people were dead. Vietnam's Minister of Construction later reported that the failure of a temporary pillar, set on an uneven foundation, had caused the collapse, with 54 killed and over 80 injured; the investigating commission called it an "unfortunate circumstance" and did not assign blame.
