1977 Granville rail disaster
A passenger train that had left Mount Victoria in the Blue Mountains for Sydney derailed while negotiating a left-hand curve 250 m west of Granville Railway Station. It ran uncontrolled for a further 46 metres before the locomotive struck and demolished one of the steel trestles carrying the Bold Street overbridge, and the damage to the supports brought the bridge down, most of it falling onto carriages 3 and 4. The Sydney Morning Herald described the bridge the following day as a "tomb". Records of the disaster list 83 people killed.
