1998 Eschede train disaster

The Intercity Express "Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen" derailed at 200 kilometres per hour on the Hanover to Hamburg line near the village of Eschede, in the Celle district of Lower Saxony, and tore down a road bridge in the process. The driver felt what he described as a tug on his locomotive; the power car separated from the carriages and coasted about three kilometres before coming to rest in Eschede station. One account notes the body of at least one of the cars detached from its underframe. Reports give 101 people killed and 88 injured.
