Hurricane Isabel (2003)
Isabel reached Category 5 strength twice over the Atlantic before weakening on its approach to the United States. It came ashore on the Outer Banks of North Carolina on September 18 as a Category 2, near Drum Inlet, with winds given as 105 mph by one account and near 100 mph by another. Storm surge washed out a portion of Hatteras Island to form what was unofficially called Isabel Inlet, and the worst effects occurred in Virginia, in the Hampton Roads area and along river shores as far west and north as Richmond and Baltimore.
