Hurricane Dennis (2005)
Dennis intensified into a hurricane on July 6 as it crossed the Caribbean Sea and briefly held the record for the strongest Atlantic hurricane to form before August. It struck Cuba twice as a Category 4, including a landfall near Punta del Inglés with 140 mph winds, and weakened to Category 3 while crossing the peninsula. It then made a final landfall on Santa Rosa Island, Florida, as a Category 3, less than a year after Hurricane Ivan came ashore on the same panhandle. Damage in the United States was put at $2.23 to $2.5 billion with roughly an equal amount in the Caribbean, mostly in Cuba.
