Typhoon Usagi (2013)

Usagi developed into a tropical storm east of the Philippines late on 16 September and began explosive intensification on 19 September, forming a round eye 28 km across; the JTWC upgraded it to a Category 5 equivalent super typhoon that day, with sustained winds reported at 160 mph and gusts near 195 mph, though post-season reanalysis concluded a peak of 155 mph. On the morning of Saturday 21 September its maximum sustained winds were 222 km/h with gusts over 260 km/h, and it was 550 kilometres south of Taipei. It made landfall in the Batanes island group early that day and swept through the Luzon Strait, triggering landslides and power outages in the northern Philippines. The storm measured about 1,100 kilometres across, with outer rain bands reaching Luzon, Taiwan and the Chinese coast.
