1877 Iquique earthquake
The earthquake struck at 21:16 local time on 9 May off northern Chile, and the tsunami that followed affected the coasts of Peru and northern Chile and was observed across the Pacific Rim. It reached the main islands of New Zealand early on the morning of 11 May, where it was less pronounced than the 1868 wave from Chile, probably because the tides were below mean sea level. The generation and propagation of the waves have since been reconstructed by numerical modelling.
