1854 Tōkai earthquake
The first of the Ansei great earthquakes struck at about 09:00 local time on 23 December 1854, with much of central Japan shaken at JMA intensity 5. The Diana, flagship of the Russian admiral Yevfimy Putyatin, then in Japan to negotiate what became the Treaty of Shimoda, was spun round forty-two times on its moorings and was damaged badly enough to sink in a later storm.
