Caffè Tommaseo
The oldest coffeehouse in the city, opened in 1830 by a Swiss merchant named Tommaso Marcato, and credited with bringing gelato to Trieste. A plaque on the outer wall, placed in 1848 while the city was Hapsburg, names the café as the centre of the national movement from which the enthusiasm for Italian liberty spread. It is on the Locali Storici d'Italia register, and open to anyone walking in off Piazza Tommaseo.
