Tower of London
Conservation, management and display here rest with Historic Royal Palaces, an independent charity rather than a government department. Inside the White Tower stands the Romanesque chapel of St John the Evangelist, built in the 11th century, while the Royal Armouries' Line of Kings display of armoured figures and wooden horses is itself some 350 years old. The Wakefield Tower carries an exhibition on the prisoners held here, and the Crown Jewels remain the reason most visitors come.
