Hampton Court Palace
Henry VIII's favoured residence passed to Historic Royal Palaces, which cares for both the building and its grounds of more than 60 acres; 2015 marked the palace's 500th anniversary. The State Rooms, the Tudor kitchens and the Cumberland Art Gallery, which hangs work by Rembrandt and Van Dyck, are all open. The maze outside dates from 1700 and still works as intended.
