Banqueting House
Built in 1622, this is the only surviving part of the Palace of Whitehall, which burned in 1698 and had been, as Henry VIII's London residence, the largest palace in Europe. Receptions and ceremonies were held in the room beneath the ceiling panels painted by Rubens. It is cared for by Historic Royal Palaces, and opens to the public through the summer months.
