1979 Independența oil spill
The Romanian-flagged tanker was carrying Libyan crude towards Istanbul when, at 5.30 on the morning of 15 November 1979, it collided with the Greek-flagged Evriali at the southern entrance to the Bosphorus, some 800 metres off Haydarpaşa station. The tanker broke in two and its stern section sank. Only two of the fifty-four crew survived, and the explosions and fire damaged houses around the shore and the historic Haydarpaşa railway station.
