1978 Amoco Cadiz oil spill
The American-owned, Liberian-flagged supertanker lost its steering mechanism and ran aground on the Portsall Rocks, three miles off the Brittany coast in Finistère, on 16 March 1978. The hull was damaged and the cargo of crude oil was released along the coast. French soldiers were still searching the shoreline for oil four months later.
