1972 Sea Star oil spill
The tanker was carrying crude oil from Ras Tanura in Saudi Arabia towards Rio de Janeiro when it collided with the Brazilian tanker Horta Barbosa in the Gulf of Oman early on the morning of 19 December 1972. The hull cracked open and released the whole cargo, and the ship drifted south-southeast leaking burning oil from a forty-foot hole in its side. Occasional explosions eventually sank it on 24 December. Twelve of the Sea Star's crew were killed in the collision.
