The Dresden museums of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen
Map of 8 locations in Dresden, Germany
Saxony's electors began assembling these holdings in the 16th century, and the state collection that grew out of them marked its 450th anniversary in 2010. The museums are scattered across separate buildings: the Residenzschloss, the Zwinger, the Albertinum, the Japanisches Palais and a converted power station, each with its own ticket desk, its own closing day and, in one case this year, its own building closure. Several of them also appear as institutions in Proveana, the German Lost Art Foundation's provenance research database, which is the other record by which a collection of this age is known.
