Ponte de São João

The engineer Edgar Cardoso designed this railway bridge as the replacement for Eiffel's single-track Maria Pia, and construction started in 1984. It opened on 24 June 1991 and took over the Linha do Norte traffic that same day, and the older bridge upstream closed to rail traffic on that date. It is one of two Douro crossings in this list credited to Cardoso, the other being the Arrábida.
