Ponte de Dona Maria Pia

The first railway bridge to join the two banks of the Douro was built by Eiffel & Cª. of Paris between 5 January 1876 and 1 October 1877 and inaugurated on 4 November 1877. Its wrought-iron crescent arch spans 160 m, and when it was built that was the longest single-arch span in the world. It carried a single track and served the Linha do Norte until 24 June 1991, when the Ponte de São João opened and trains stopped using it. It was classified a National Monument in 1982, and Infraestruturas de Portugal still inspects and maintains the closed structure.
