Checkpoint Charlie
The Allied name followed the NATO alphabet: Alpha at Helmstedt-Marienborn on the inner-German border, Bravo at Dreilinden, Charlie here at Friedrichstraße and Zimmerstraße. US forces controlled it first, and British and French military later joined them, while the GDR rebuilt and extended its own side many times. Rainer Hildebrandt opened an exhibition on escape attempts beside the crossing in 1963, and with a viewing platform at the Wall it was already a tourist site before 1989.
