1994 sinking of the MS Estonia
The ferry was damaged by high waves on the overnight run from Tallinn to Stockholm and sank in the early hours of 28 September 1994, in Finnish waters near the island of Uto. She vanished from the radar screens of other ships following the situation 28 minutes after her first radio distress call. The bow door was raised from the sea bed off Uto that November, and a joint Swedish and Estonian probe completed in 1997 found that she had been seaworthy when she left Tallinn.
