1904 SS Norge disaster
The Danish steamer was carrying emigrants from Scandinavia and Russia to New York when she ran aground on the Rockall shoals on 28 June 1904, having drifted about 375 miles off course. Accounts of the number aboard differ, one giving 700 people and another 727 passengers and crew. Her eight lifeboats could hold only 250 people, much of her safety gear did not work properly and not all the boats could be launched. Fifty-two survivors were admitted to a house in the Outer Hebrides on 4 July.
