Christ Church, Spitalfields
Built between 1714 and 1729 under the Act of May 1711 for Fifty New Churches, with Hawksmoor working as the commission's surveyor. The brief was polemical as much as pastoral: a Church of England statement addressed to the non-conformist Huguenot population of the parish, and the work ended up costing more than four times its early budget. Hawksmoor's first scheme had a flat front and a box tower, which he reworked after the main body of the church was finished in 1723.
