Getty Tomb

Sullivan designed this mausoleum in Graceland Cemetery in 1890 for Henry Harrison Getty, in memory of his wife Carrie Eliza, three years after building the Ryerson tomb a short walk away in the same grounds. It is a plain limestone cube whose upper half and bronze gates carry the interlaced ornament Sullivan was working out at the same moment on his commercial fronts, at a scale you can read from arm's length. The cemetery is open to walk through, which makes it one of the few Sullivan works whose detail can be examined without a ticket or an appointment.
