Auditorium Building

Adler and Sullivan built this between 1886 and 1890 as a single mixed-use block: a 4,200-seat theatre wrapped in a hotel and an office tower, with Adler's engineering carrying the load and Sullivan's ornament on the surfaces. It opened in 1889 and the theatre has been in continuous use as a performance venue since; the offices and hotel rooms now belong to Roosevelt University, which is why the OSM record classes the whole stone pile as a university building. It is a National Historic Landmark and the earliest of the firm's large Chicago commissions still standing.
