Honest Jon's
Trading since 1974, when it sold jazz records out of a former butcher's shop on Golborne Road, and on Portobello Road since the 1980s. Mark Ainley and Alan Scholefield took the shop over from one of the original proprietors, "Honest" Jon Clare, and since 2002 have run the Honest Jon's label in conjunction with Damon Albarn; the shop's owner also lent a former hired hand, James Lavelle, £1,000 to start Mo' Wax. Jazz, blues, reggae, soul, folk and what the shop files as outernational, on vinyl and CD, with a mail-order side.
