2010 Gansu mudslide
Flooding over the weekend of 7 and 8 August 2010 set off massive slides in the Zhouqu district of Gansu, in remote northwestern China, where three villages were swallowed in waves of mud and rubble-strewn water. Hundreds died, and Xinhua reported that at least 600 people remained missing, with the last rescues made on the Wednesday that followed. Continuing downpours flooded tents set up as emergency shelters, threatened further landslides and made rescue work nearly impossible.
